Join us on YouTube, November 12-21 for I need opera…and dance - a filmed celebration of both art forms as they are
manifested in the works of three brilliant contemporary composers: Jake Heggie, John Greer, and Lee Hoiby. Directed by
respected Canadian stage director Rob Herriot, this project marks The LOC’s first foray into film - three independent works
that provide a breath of fresh air when we need it most.
Jake Heggie’s At the Statue of Venus is a lighthearted look at the insecurities of blind dating. Sung by Karen Santos with
Megan Dufrat on piano this opera explores every emotion on the breath of some of the most engaging melodies in
contemporary opera. It seemed a perfect choice for those of us who are looking for a bit of vicarious adventure. Watch for
the set artwork by Karen Santos too!
John Greer’s Sarah Binks Songbook features six songs that give insight into the life of the “Sweet Songstress of
Saskatchewan”. And just when you think it couldn’t get any better, the marriage of movement takes the experience to even
greater levels of enjoyment. Sung by Jessica Kos-Whicher accompanied by Lisa Rumpel on piano, choreographed by
Odette Heyn, danced by Carol-Ann Bohrn and Warren McClelland, this performance is sure to get you moving.
Isolation has a way of drawing our attention to other pastimes, like food and who has a better grasp on this art form than
Julia Child? Lee Hoiby has brilliantly taken one of Ms. Child’s cooking episodes and sets it to music in Bon Appétit. Lizzy
Hoyt and Lisa Rumpel amuse and delight us as they show us the in and outs, ups and downs of baking a French chocolate
cake.
